What to Do If Your Rental Car Breaks Down in Morocco
If your rental car breaks down in Morocco, get everyone to safety, switch on your hazard lights and call the assistance number on your rental agreement. Send your exact location, plate number and symptoms. On a motorway, also call Autoroutes du Maroc (ADM) on 5050. Don’t agree to towing, repairs or payments until the rental company approves them.
A breakdown is stressful at home. In a country where you may not speak the language or know the roads, it feels worse.
The good news: every breakdown follows the same pattern. Get safe. Call the right people. Share the right details. Keep a record.
This guide walks you through that pattern. It comes from the team at Carrent Casablanca, so it focuses on what renters really need to ask, check and avoid.
Stuck right now? Use the 60-second checklist below.
Planning a trip? Save this page and read the pre-drive checks near the end.
One note: every rental company sets its own terms. Your rental agreement always comes first. Use this guide to know which questions to ask, not to replace your contract.
The 60-Second Breakdown Checklist
- Check for injuries. If anyone is hurt, or you see fire or smoke, call emergency services first.
- Switch on your hazard lights. Do it straight away, day or night.
- Roll to the safest spot. Aim for the hard shoulder or a lay-by. Avoid bends and hilltops.
- Move passengers away from traffic. Wait behind a crash barrier or well off the road.
- Call your assistance number. Use the one on your rental agreement. On a motorway, also call 5050.
- Send your location and car details. A WhatsApp pin, plate number and short description are enough.
- Hold off on towing, repairs and payments. Wait for the rental company to confirm in writing.
- Start a simple log. Note the time, who you called and what they said.
Screenshot this list. It’s easier to follow when you’re stressed.
Breakdown, Accident or Emergency? Check First
The right first call depends on what happened. Mixing them up wastes time.
| What happened | Type | Call first |
| Car won’t start, lost power, flat tyre, warning light | Breakdown | Rental assistance (plus ADM 5050 on a motorway) |
| Collision, even a minor one | Accident | Emergency services if needed, then the rental company |
| Injury, fire or smoke | Emergency | Emergency numbers, then the rental company |
| Scratch, dent or windscreen chip | Damage | The rental company, once you’re safe |
This guide covers breakdowns. For collisions, excess and damage, read our guide to insurance options for rental cars in Morocco.
Emergency Numbers to Save Before You Drive
| Service | Number |
| Royal Gendarmerie (rural roads, outside cities) | 177 |
| Police (cities) | 190 |
| Civil Protection (ambulance and fire) | 150 |
| ADM motorway assistance | 5050 |
Older guides list police as 19 and ambulance as 15, so you may see both versions. Save the numbers on your rental paperwork too. Before you travel, check the latest UK government travel advice for Morocco.
A mechanical fault alone doesn’t need the police. Call them for injuries, fire, a collision, or if you feel unsafe.
Step 1: Get Everyone Safe
Safety comes before paperwork. Photos, calls and diagnosis can wait two minutes.
Pull Over Where Other Drivers Can See You
Signal early and steer toward the hard shoulder or a lay-by. Avoid bends, hilltops and tunnel exits.
If the engine cuts out in a live lane, keep your hazards on and let the car roll toward the edge.
On a motorway, stop as far right as you can, with the wheels turned away from the carriageway.
Use Hazard Lights and Your Warning Triangle
Switch on your hazards immediately, day or night.
Most rental cars carry a warning triangle. Place it only if you can do so safely. Never walk into traffic to set it up. Your safety matters more.
Move Passengers Away From Traffic
Passengers should get out on the side away from the road. Then they should wait behind a crash barrier or well clear of the carriageway.
Keep children and pets with an adult. Take your phone, passports and wallet. Put on a high-visibility vest if you have one.
Heat, Night and Cold
In summer, find shade and drink water. Never leave children or pets in a closed car.
At night, keep your hazards on and stay visible. Use your phone torch if you must walk.
In the Atlas Mountains, temperatures drop fast after dark. Keep warm layers within reach.
When Not to Keep Driving
Stop if you see a red warning light, smoke or a burning smell, or if the brakes or steering feel wrong. Don’t try to reach the next town.
A short drive can turn a repairable fault into a damaged engine. That means a bigger bill and a longer wait.
Step 2: Decide Who to Call
Three kinds of help exist. Calling the right one first saves time and money.
| Where you are | Call first | Also call |
| City, town or regional road | Your rental company’s assistance line | Emergency numbers if anyone is in danger |
| ADM motorway | ADM on 5050 and your rental company | Gendarmerie (177) if there’s danger |
| Remote or mountain road | Your rental company | Gendarmerie (177) if it’s urgent |
Call Carrent Casablanca First
If you rent from Carrent Casablanca, call or WhatsApp our team using the number on your rental agreement. Our contact page lists current channels. Our guide to car rental support in Morocco for foreigners explains each one.
Why call the rental company before anyone else?
- They hold your contract and know your cover.
- They can confirm who is authorised to recover the car.
- They can arrange a repair or, where possible, a replacement.
- They can tell you what not to sign or pay.
Calling a random tow truck first can create problems later.
On a Motorway, Call ADM on 5050
Autoroutes du Maroc runs a 5050 call centre for motorway breakdown and accident assistance. It can also tell you which towing companies are approved and which tariffs apply.
Towing prices aren’t random. ADM says they depend on the motorway section, the kilometres the tow unit travels, the vehicle category and the service needed. It also says it audits operators’ invoices after overcharging complaints, according to Moroccan press coverage.
The practical rule: call both 5050 and your rental company. ADM coordinates the motorway operator. Your rental company confirms what your contract allows.
If a driver stops and offers a tow without being sent, ask them to confirm through 5050 and your rental company first.
One limit to remember: 5050 covers the motorway network. It isn’t a breakdown line for every road in Morocco.
When to Call the Gendarmerie or Police
Call 177 (Gendarmerie Royale, on rural roads) or 190 (police, in cities) for injuries, a collision, threats, or if you’re stranded somewhere unsafe. Call 150 for a medical emergency or fire.
If Nobody Answers
- Call twice, then send a WhatsApp message. The message gives you a time-stamped record.
- Try any alternate number listed in your rental agreement.
- On a motorway, call 5050 anyway.
- If anyone is in danger, call the emergency numbers. Don’t wait for the rental company.
- Log every attempt: time, number, result. Screenshot your messages.
- Don’t arrange repairs yourself. If safety forces you to move the car, do the minimum and note why.
Step 3: Tell Assistance Exactly What They Need
Accurate details get help to you faster. Vague details cause delays and repeat calls.
The Information Card
| Detail | Why it matters |
| Your name and booking reference | Finds your contract quickly |
| Plate number and car model | Identifies the right vehicle |
| Location pin (WhatsApp or Google Maps) | Gives an exact position |
| Road and direction of travel | Separates two sides of the same road |
| Nearest kilometre marker, exit, toll plaza or town | Backs up the pin if the signal drops |
| What happened and when it started | Helps decide what help to send |
| Number of passengers and any special needs | Affects transport and priority |
| Your callback number and language | Avoids confusion later |
Copy-and-Paste Message Template
Save this in your phone notes before your trip:
Booking reference:
Name:
Car and plate number:
Location pin:
Road and direction:
Nearest marker, exit or town:
What happened and when:
People in the car (children, elderly, medical needs):
Any danger? (traffic, night, heat)
Please confirm: who is coming, where the car will go, and what I should not pay or sign.
Send it even if you’ve already phoned. A written message protects you if there’s a dispute later.
Useful French Phrases
French is widely understood by tow operators and dispatchers across Morocco.
| English | French |
| My rental car has broken down. | Ma voiture de location est en panne. |
| Here is my location. | Voici ma position. |
| The engine won’t start. | Le moteur ne démarre pas. |
| I have a flat tyre. | J’ai un pneu crevé. |
| Please send authorised assistance. | Envoyez une assistance agréée, s’il vous plaît. |
| Who authorised this tow? | Qui a autorisé ce remorquage ? |
| How much will it cost? | Combien cela va-t-il coûter ? |
| I need a receipt. | J’ai besoin d’un reçu. |
Describe What You See, Not What You Guess
Say “the car lost power and a red battery light came on.” Don’t say “the gearbox is broken.”
Facts help the garage diagnose the fault. Guesses can send the wrong help or start a blame argument.
Step 4: What to Do for Common Problems
Use these as a guide. Always follow the instructions from your assistance team.
The Car Won’t Start or the Battery Is Dead
Switch off lights, A/C and phone chargers. Try once, calmly. Repeated attempts can flatten the battery or harm the engine.
Tell us if the car stopped while driving or never started at all. They’re different problems.
Don’t accept a jump-start from a stranger before the rental company agrees. A wrong connection can damage the electronics.
Flat Tyre
Don’t change a wheel beside live traffic. On a motorway, never do it.
Tell assistance which tyre is flat and whether you hit something. Ask whether to use the spare or wait for help.
Don’t drive on a flat tyre to reach the next town. It ruins the wheel.
Tyre damage is often handled separately in insurance terms, so ask about it early.
Overheating or Steam
Pull over safely and switch the engine off. Keep clear of the bonnet.
Never open the radiator or coolant cap while the engine is hot. The liquid can scald you.
Tell assistance what the temperature gauge showed and whether you saw steam or smelled coolant.
Warning Lights
Colour matters.
- Red lights (oil pressure, engine temperature, brakes, battery): stop safely and call.
- Amber lights (engine check, tyre pressure, service): slow down, report it and ask whether you can continue.
Photograph the dashboard when it’s safe. Icons are hard to describe over the phone.
Don’t ignore a red light. Don’t disconnect anything to clear it.
Loss of Power, Strange Noises, Brake or Steering Trouble
Lift off the accelerator, shift down if the car allows, and brake gently and early. Steer to safety.
Don’t restart the engine “to see if it’s fixed.” Tell assistance what you heard or felt, and when.
Wrong Fuel
If you notice before starting the engine, don’t start it. Don’t even switch the ignition on. Call assistance.
If you notice while driving, pull over and stop the engine as soon as it’s safe.
Keep the fuel receipt. Wrong fuel is often treated as driver-caused, so quick, honest reporting limits the damage.
Locked Out or Lost Keys
Check you haven’t left the key inside. Then call assistance and ask about a spare key.
Don’t force a door or break a window unless a child or pet is in danger. Ask about any fee for a lost key.
Air-Conditioning and Other Non-Urgent Faults
Not every fault is a roadside emergency. Weak A/C, a rattling panel or a dim light won’t strand you.
Report it the same day, in writing. Ask whether a car swap is possible instead of carrying on.
In Moroccan summer heat, working A/C matters for comfort and for children’s safety.
Step 5: Towing, Who May Move Your Car?
Can I Call My Own Tow Truck?
Not before you’ve spoken to the rental company. Unapproved towing or repairs can leave you paying for work nobody agreed to.
The exception is danger. If staying put is unsafe, move to safety, record what you did, and tell the rental company immediately.
Tow Checklist Before the Truck Leaves
- Ask who sent the operator. It should be the rental company or ADM.
- Note the driver’s name, company and truck plate. Take a photo.
- Confirm the destination. Get it in writing if you can.
- Ask about price before loading. Is it paid by you, or by the rental company?
- Never pay cash without a receipt.
- Photograph the car. Capture all sides and the dashboard (mileage, fuel, warning lights).
- Remove valuables. Take passports, luggage and child seats.
- Ask about your own transport. Can you ride with the truck, or will a taxi be arranged?
- Note the pick-up time and keep any slip.
How to Spot an Overcharge
A fair operator can explain the price. Ask for a breakdown: base fee, kilometres, time of day.
On motorways, check approved operators and tariffs with ADM on 5050. Off motorways, check with your rental company first.
For more on avoiding bad deals, read our French guide to arnaques en location de voiture au Maroc.
Get Written Approval Before Any Repair
A local garage may offer a quick fix. Politely decline until the rental company approves it in writing.
Unapproved repairs can void your cover and start a dispute. A short message, “Approved: tow to X garage, assessment only”, is enough.
Step 6: Who Pays for Towing, Repairs and Extras?
Short answer: it depends on the cause and your rental agreement. Don’t assume. Ask before accepting any service.
Costs split into separate questions:
| Cost | Ask this |
| Roadside attendance | Is it included for this incident? |
| Towing | Who approved the operator, and who pays? |
| Diagnosis and repair | Who authorises the garage and the work? |
| Passenger transport | Is it arranged, and is it included? |
| Replacement car | Is one available, and on what terms? |
| Taxi, meals or hotel | What needs approval, and which receipts are required? |
“Help is on the way” doesn’t mean “everything is free.” Ask directly.
Mechanical Fault vs Driver-Caused Problem
Rental companies usually treat these differently.
- Often a genuine mechanical fault: a failure that develops through normal use.
- Often driver-related: wrong fuel, ignoring a red warning light, driving where the contract forbids it, lost keys.
- Often handled under insurance terms: tyre damage, windscreen damage, accident damage.
That’s how rentals commonly work, not a promise for every contract. Your agreement decides. For excess and exclusions, see our insurance guide.
Deposit, Excess and Fees
Ask three questions:
- Will anything be taken from my deposit?
- If so, why, and how much?
- Can you send that in writing, itemised?
For what standard charges cover, see our car rental fee guide.
Keep Written Approval and Receipts
Keep these safe:
- Written approval for the tow and any repair.
- The towing slip and any invoice.
- Taxi or transport receipts.
- Screenshots of calls and messages.
If you pay for something yourself, ask first whether it will be reimbursed. If safety forced the spend, say so in writing.

Step 7: Replacement Car and Getting Back on the Road
Will You Get a Replacement?
Maybe. It depends on the cause of the breakdown, where you are and what’s free in the fleet. Depending on the situation, the options are usually a repair or a replacement car.
Don’t accept a time promise nobody can verify. Ask for an estimate for your specific incident, and ask again if it slips.
What to Ask Before You Accept a Replacement
- Where will it be delivered, or where do I collect it?
- When can I realistically expect it?
- Is it the same category, or a different one?
- Is it automatic or manual?
- Are there enough seats and luggage space?
- Can my child seats move across?
- Do my rental dates, price and cover carry over?
- Are there any extra charges?
Match the Car to Your Group
A replacement should fit your trip, not just be “a car.”
- Want an easy drive in traffic? Ask for an automatic car.
- Travelling as a family? A 7-seater or a minivan such as the Hyundai Staria may suit better. Our guide to the best SUV to rent in Casablanca for families helps you compare.
- Heavy luggage? A compact SUV such as the Dacia Duster or Hyundai Tucson offers more space.
Availability varies by day. Ask what is actually free right now.
Inspect the Replacement Before You Drive Off
- Walk around and photograph every panel. Existing damage on the replacement isn’t yours.
- Check the fuel level and mileage, and note them on the paperwork.
- Check the spare, the jack and the warning triangle.
- Confirm that insurance and assistance numbers carry over.
- Confirm the return location and time.
- Sign only after you’ve checked the condition report.
If a Repair Is Faster Than a Replacement
Sometimes a car can be fixed in hours. Ask which option gets you moving sooner and which protects your schedule.
Also ask what happens to the rental days you lose while waiting. Get the answer in writing.
If No Replacement Is Available
Ask about alternatives: a different category, delivery to your hotel, or a driver for the rest of the trip.
Our comparison of car rental with a driver vs self-drive explains how each works. You can also see our chauffeur-driven options. A hotel-delivery option can save you a trip back to the office.
Step 8: Special Situations
Breakdown at Night
Report it at once. Don’t wait for the office to open.
Use the emergency assistance line, not the office number. Stay together, stay visible and keep your phone charged. Log every attempt to reach help.
In the Mountains or Near the Desert
Signal fades on mountain passes, and help can take longer to arrive.
Send your pin while you still have signal. Give assistance the nearest village, the road number and your direction of travel.
Check your rental terms before leaving paved roads. Not every rental is built or covered for it.
Planning a scenic route? Read our guide to the best roads to drive in Morocco and our guide to driving from Casablanca to the Sahara. If your route needs a tougher vehicle, see location 4×4 au Maroc.
With No Mobile Signal
Prepare before you leave. Download offline maps, save the message template and carry a power bank.
If you have no signal, stay near the car and in sight of the road. Ask a passing driver, or a nearby petrol station, café or shop, to call for you.
Don’t wander off. A stationary car is easier to find than a walking stranger.
Far From Where You Picked Up the Car
On a longer route, help may be a long way off. Tell us your route before you leave, and tell us where you are on it if something goes wrong.
Our trip guides cover Casablanca to Marrakech by car, the Casablanca to Agadir road trip, Casablanca to Rabat and car rental to Chefchaouen.

On the Way to the Airport
A breakdown before a flight is the highest-pressure case.
Give assistance your flight time on the first call. Ask for onward transport separately, and ask whether a taxi can be approved for reimbursement.
If your flight matters more than the car, say so. For return planning, see our Casablanca airport car rental guide.
Inside a City
In Casablanca, in a district like Maarif or downtown, you usually have an address. That makes your location easier to describe.
Give the street name, a nearby landmark or the building number. In a car park, give the level and bay.
We also publish local guides for location de voiture à Mohammedia, car rental in Rabat, car rental in Fes and car rental in Tangier. The same steps apply in every city.
With Children, Older Passengers or Health Needs
Tell assistance on the first call. Keep water, medication and snacks within reach.
If the wait will be long, ask whether transport for vulnerable passengers can be prioritised. Never leave a child alone in the car or at the roadside.
Step 9: Missed Flights, Hotels and Tours
A breakdown doesn’t automatically entitle you to compensation. Your rental agreement and your travel insurance decide.
What you can do:
- Give assistance your deadline on the first call.
- Ask about onward passenger transport separately.
- Keep every receipt and a simple timeline.
- Ask in writing about unused rental days or credits.
- Check your travel insurance for delay or missed-departure cover, and notify the insurer promptly.
Ask what is possible. Don’t assume what will be paid.
Step 10: After Recovery, Close the Incident Properly
Once you’re moving again, finish the paperwork while details are fresh. Ask for:
- The reported cause of the fault, in writing.
- An itemised invoice for any approved charge.
- Written confirmation of how your rental continues: new car, same dates, same price?
- The return location, plus fuel and mileage records.
- A written answer on unused days or credits.
- A clear statement on whether any deposit deduction will apply.
Then keep everything in one place: one folder or one WhatsApp chat. Include dashboard photos, messages, the call log, the tow slip, receipts and the replacement car’s condition report.
Disputes settle faster when you can show a clear timeline.
How to Choose a Rental Company With Clear Breakdown Terms
Price matters. Terms matter more when something goes wrong.
Ask any rental company these questions, including us:
| Question | Why it matters |
| Is there a 24/7 assistance number, and what is it? | You’ll need it within minutes |
| Which roads and regions does assistance cover? | Remote routes may differ |
| What is included, and what is chargeable? | Avoids surprise bills |
| Who approves towing and repairs? | Prevents disputes |
| Do you offer replacement cars, and under what conditions? | Sets expectations |
| What happens to my rental days and deposit? | Avoids confusion later |
| Can you confirm all of this in writing? | Gives you proof |
A low price is a good start. A clear policy is better.
Looking for value? Read our guide to the cheapest way to rent a car in Casablanca, or see budget options like location voiture 150 DH and location voiture Casablanca 150 DH. Whatever the price, ask the same questions.
The procedure in this guide doesn’t change with the car. It’s the same whether you choose an economy car or a luxury car. Browse every car for rent in Casablanca, see our full vehicle range, or learn about our team.
Long-Term and Monthly Rentals
Longer rentals add servicing, wear and more kilometres.
Ask who handles services, what to do when a service light appears, and how a car swap works while yours is in the garage.
See our guide to location voiture longue durée, or the city pages for Casablanca, Marrakech, Agadir and Fes. For one-month plans, read about monthly car rental in Casablanca.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who do I call if my rental car breaks down in Morocco?
Call the assistance number on your rental agreement. On an ADM motorway, also call 5050. For injuries, fire or danger, call emergency services first.
What is 5050 in Morocco?
5050 is the Autoroutes du Maroc call centre for motorway breakdown and accident assistance. It also gives information on approved towing companies and tariffs. It covers the motorway network, not every road.
Is roadside assistance included with every rental in Morocco?
Not necessarily. It depends on the company and the agreement. Ask what’s included and what’s chargeable before you book, and get it in writing.
Can I get a replacement car after a breakdown?
Sometimes. It depends on the fault, your location and fleet availability. Ask for an estimate for your specific incident, not a general promise.
Can I use a local mechanic or my own tow truck?
Not without the rental company’s approval. Unapproved work can leave you paying for it. If safety forces you to act, document it and tell the company at once.
Will I have to pay for the tow?
It depends on the cause and your agreement. Ask who approved the operator and who pays before the car is loaded. Keep the receipt.
Do I need a police report for a mechanical breakdown?
Usually not for a purely mechanical fault. Accidents, theft and injuries are different. Ask your rental company what your situation requires.
Can I keep driving if a warning light comes on?
Red light: stop safely and call. Amber light: slow down, report it and ask whether you can continue. Never ignore either.
What if my car breaks down at night?
Use the 24/7 assistance line straight away, not the office number. Stay visible, keep passengers together and record every call.
What if the breakdown makes me miss my flight?
Give assistance your deadline on the first call and ask about onward transport. Keep receipts. Compensation depends on your agreement and travel insurance, so don’t assume it.
Does a breakdown affect my deposit?
Ask. If any deduction is planned, request the reason and an itemised amount in writing. Your agreement sets the rules.
How can I avoid a breakdown?
Do the ten-minute check at pickup: tyres, spare, fuel type, warning lights and A/C. Report dashboard warnings and faults the same day.
